Mechanism Behind Mind-body Connection Discovered

July 16, 2008

Every cell contains a tiny clock called a telomere, which shortens each time the cell divides. Short telomeres are linked to a range of human diseases, including HIV, osteoporosis, heart disease and aging. Previous studies show that an enzyme within the cell, called telomerase, keeps immune cells young by preserving their telomere length and ability to continue dividing.

UCLA scientists found that the stress hormone cortisol suppresses immune cells' ability to activate their telomerase. This may explain why the cells of persons under chronic stress have shorter telomeres.

The study reveals how stress makes people more susceptible to illness. The findings also suggest a potential drug target for preventing damage to the immune systems of persons who are under long-term stress, such as caregivers to chronically ill family members, as well as astronauts, soldiers, air traffic controllers and people who drive long daily commutes.

Rita Effros, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and a member of the Jonsson Cancer Center, Molecular Biology Institute and UCLA AIDS Institute, is available for interviews.

"When the body is under stress, it boosts production of cortisol to support a "fight or flight" response," explains Effros. "If the hormone remains elevated in the bloodstream for long periods of time, though, it wears down the immune system. We are testing therapeutic ways of enhancing telomerase levels to help the immune system ward off cortisol's effect. If we're successful, one day a pill may exist to strengthen the immune system's ability to weather chronic emotional stress."

The research was published in the May issue of the peer-reviewed journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity.

The study was supported by the National Institute of Aging, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the Geron Corp. and TA Therapeutics, Ltd.

H20 Detected from an Unlikely Source: Moon Volcanoes

July 11, 2008

Moon_gal
As if recent reports of Mercurian rock-water weren't exciting enough, H20 has been detected from an unlikely source even closer to home: Moon Volcanoes. Yes, that's water from Moon Volcanoes, and anybody who says science is boring doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

For years the scientific opinion of satellite matched what you'd expect from the moon mission images - a barren, dusty plain that makes the Sahara look like the sixth great lake.

The moon was believed to be utterly dehydrated, constantly baked to hundreds of degrees by direct solar radiation and with gravity too weak to hold any atmosphere. Any moisture would have to be delivered by cometary impact and then hidden in shadowed craters.

Recent results from a collaboration of American universities have changed all that. All previous studies on moon samples had a minimum moisture sensitivity of fifty parts per million; it turns out the precious water was hiding down at the forty-six per million mark. Analysing samples of volcanic glass beads with the new technique of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) the bashful water was finally detected.

The distribution of H20 in the samples is consistent with the original material being relatively rich in water, about as much as the Earth's upper mantle, but the volcanic processes causing 95% of it to be lost. While most would have escaped into space, some is thought to have collected at the lunar poles in shadowed regions. Ready-made ice-banks just waiting to be tapped by future lunarnauts.

The shrinking human brain

May 26, 2008
By T. Davidson

Most people don't know this but the human brain has shrunk dramatically through the millennia of the history of mankind. Scientists are in some disagreement as to whether this shrinkage started thirty thousand years ago, or ten thousand years ago, but they agree that the brain has shrunk by 8-10%. The brain has in fact been shrinking for the past 100,000 years albeit at a slower rate.

The Hypnotic Handshake

July
By Shlomo Vaknin, C.Ht
Source: NLP Weekly

The Hypnotic Handshake method is based on ‘brief hypnosis’. Brief hypnosis is a less known format of hypnotizing, first initiated by Dr. Milton H. Erickson. Erickson also taught the Hypnotic Handshake method based on the principles of brief hypnosis.

Brief hypnosis claims that most people enter trance (the hypnotic state of mind) and exit trance many times during the day.

One good example would be driving on the free way, white you’re figuring out what to say to your boss about you being late again (for the 29th time this month). Not being aware completely to the road and to the driving activity, you still make it in one piece to the office. That’s hypnosis.

Brief hypnosis starts with a rapid induction to get a person into trance. Rapid induction is based on two key principles:

Rapid Induction Principle No. 1: Interrupt the auto-pilot

We are predictable creatures. Lift your right hand toward someone, say Hi, smile, and he will automatically lift his right hand to shake yours. Odd. He didn’t even think about it, it happened automatically. It’s the auto-pilot. One of many automatic behaviors we’re known of doing without conscious decision.

If you interrupt an automatic behavior like this, you create an empty space, a query in the other person’s mind, a brief window to the subconscious mind. It takes less than a second for that window to close, so you’d better act fast.

Rapid Induction Principle No.2: Fill the blank

Now that the automatic pattern is missing, fill the blank quickly. The other person will follow if it’s done immediately after the interruption, because our minds don’t like voids. They want completion.

Do something that will restore the missing link. Use hypnotic language and fast pacing induction script while talking in your regular voice.

Now that you know the key principles of rapid induction in brief hypnosis, let’s move on to show you the Hypnotic Handshake method:

Step 1: Interrupt the Auto Handshake

Let’s say you’re going to hypnotize John. John is a nice guy, but he deserves to be hypnotized and positively abused (meaning he will be happy during and after the session).

You meet John, smile at him, look him directly in the eyes and you lift your right hand toward him for a handshake. Now stay alert!

For the handshake interrupt, as John’s hand comes up, you form a cup with your thumb and first finger. Instead of meeting John’s right hand with yours, you put your hand in cup form under his hand that is coming to shake.

But then your hand goes back just a little bit—don’t pull it way back, just an inch. The other hand goes behind the wrist so that it goes up. Just gently cup it and move his hand up in front of his eyes and say, “Look!??

That’s an awesome interruption! John would never expect something like that! Oh, poor John… Oh well, on with the plan…

Step 2: Pull him into hypnosis

In hypnosis we don’t ask people to relax and allow themselves to be hypnotized. We make them to be! Yes, I know, I have to be nice to my clients. Still, you have to show them who’s the boss, right? And if I’m getting paid and they are paying, I guess I’m the one who’s in charge here.

Don’t get nervous now. Pull John into hypnosis. Here’s how:

As you pass John’s hand in front of his eyes and say “Look!”, you point with your other hand toward his hand. That’s a new program.

“John, look at your hand and nod when you notice the changing focus of your eyes, and as you notice it, see if you can take a deeper breath than the one you just had and as you notice the changing focus, that’s right! You may let your eyes stay close on the next… that’s the way, I will let you know when you are ready to let your hand rest and go all the way down… listen, can you hear all the sounds, aren’t they clearer… ”

And from here you can continue with deepeners or with hypnotic suggestions and make John’s shocking experience of hypnosis a pleasant one.

One warning: make sure your victim (cough… client) is sitting on a chair and not standing up. I did this technique once on a ‘non believer’ while he was standing up, and he fell down on the floor… I had to use amnesia and pain-killer techniques to make sure he’s not resentful afterwards…

Oh, and another warning: remember to take John out of hypnosis when you’re done!

EU “Democracy” Unveiled

June
by Gabriel O’Hara

When countries took the first step in what would expand in to the EU, the people and their political representatives never imagined their nation’s rights along with their culture would not be respected and undermined. The assumption was each nation would be treated how the law treats individuals. Just like how a young red haired woman is legally equal to a tall broad portly middle-aged man, they both have the same rights which are respected regardless of size or opinion. Unsurprisingly it is not legal even for two large men to intimidate a young lady to down a dark lane against her wishes. But psychologically things have changed in the EU. The unelected leadership are implanting their “imaginative” opinions around the union with their easy access to the media. Under the EU’s own rules if one nation rejects a treaty it does not get passed in to law. It is now EU psychologically acceptable, even if it’s against the rules, for large nations to drag smaller nations in to a treaty against their wishes. No will not be accepted, nations must be pressured in to giving the only answer, yes.

It is also EU acceptable to say Ireland is undemocratically holding back other EU countries that ratified the Lisbon treaty, such as France . To accept this statement all one is required to do is to demote information. Undervalue the information that French citizens had a referendum on the EU Constitution (over 96% the same as the Lisbon Treaty) in 2005 and voted No. The next step is to put a neutral value on the fact the French citizens were denied a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Finally overvalue the information that a few hundred French politicians ratified the Lisbon treaty and now you can “think” the Irish people are denying the French people democracy. With practice one can become fluent in this way of “thinking”. EU “democracy”.

On the day of the No vote, Gordon Brown according to reports, called French President Nicolas Sarkozy, “to assure him that British ratification would continue.” After the vote was announced on Friday June 13th European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the treaty is “alive and we should now try to find a solution.”

Rogue Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen had the choice to stand behind his people’s democratic decision but he choose, like his predecessor, to squirm up to the EU elite and ask for time to find an “option” around democracy. Last Thursday at an EU summit Cowen said, “We also agreed it is necessary for Ireland to have time now to analyse last week’s vote and explore options.” The Cowen option is not to exercise his right to demand ratification to end but to buy time allowing the other EU governments (not the citizens) to ratify the treaty; manufacturing a 26 to 1 situation allowing pressure to pile on the Irish people for YES vote in a second referendum. Inside sources have informed the Irish Independent that Cowen has until next spring to prepare for a second referendum.

EU politicians are calling for Irish Commissioner Charlie McCreevy to resign because of what he also said he never read the treaty and expressed his opinion on certain negative aspects of the EU, but when Irish MEP De Rossa actually voted not to respect the Irish referendum last Feb at the EU parliament they remained silent. The EU parliament voted in favour of not respecting the Irish referendum by a huge majority of 499 to 129, obviously the EU does not support democracy by the citizens of Europe but rather democracy for the hand-picked political management of the elite, an oligarchy.

Irish had to vote twice on Nice until we said yes. In 1992 the Danish voted No to the Maastricht treaty and were forced to vote a second time until they vote yes a year later. Switzerland was forced to vote five times in a referendum, maybe on the sixth time the propaganda will work. But once you vote yes they don’t ask again.

Over 80% of laws in countries under the Union now come from the EU not their national parliaments. What type of people are managing the EU? Let’s briefly have a look at what the European Commission president Mr. Barroso’s calls a “high quality commission”, as stated by British Member of the European Parliament Nigel Farage:

- Commissioner Barrot
“From France we have Mr. Jacques Barrot, he will take on transport. In 2000 he received an 8 month suspended jail sentence for his involvement in an embesslement case and was banned from holding public office for two years.”

- Commissioner Kovács
“From Hungary we have Mr. Kovács. He will take on taxation. For many years a communist apparatchik. A friend of Mr. Kadar, a dictator there, and an outspoken opponent of the values we hold dear in the west.”

- Commissioner Kallas
“From Estonia we have Mr. Kallas. For twenty years a soviet party apparatchik, until his newly acquired taste for capitalism got him in to some trouble. Though to be fair he was acquitted of abuse and fraud, but convicted for providing false information. And he is going to be in charge of the anti-fraud drive.”

- Commissioner Peter Mandelson
“From the UK we got Peter Mandelson. He’ll take on the trade portfolio. He of course was twice removed from the British government”

- Commissioner Kroes
“From the Netherlands we got Neelie Kroes, she’ll take on competition. She is accused of lying to the European Parliament, now these may only be allegations, but they are made by Mr. Van Buitenen and I think should be listened to.”

MEP Farage continues his speech to the EU Parliament and asks, “would you buy a used car from this commission?”

As expected, the EU has preformed a “survey” of the Lisbon vote with a small number of people, 2,000. From this small sampling the EU will make up excuses why the Irish must vote again until they vote the way they are supposed to, yes, the only option. The excuse for why they forced another referendum with Nice was because of a low turn out, however the Lisbon treaty had the highest turn out this decade for an EU treaty in Ireland , higher than Nice II, which means they will have to think of another excuse.

A ready-made excuse could be that they Irish people were too dumb to understand the treaty. Ready-made because it is widely admitted that the Lisbon Treaty was designed to be unreadable: “They decided that the document should be unreadable.” (Giuliano Amato, former Italian Prime Minister and Vice-Chairman of the EU Constitution Convention - 2007), “The aim of the Constitutional Treaty was to be more readable; the aim of this treaty is to be unreadable” (Karel de Gucht, Belgian Foreign Minister, Flandreinfo, June 2007). Even the Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen admitted he never read the treaty (but he voted Yes). Of course just to be safe more excuses/artillery will be manufactured from the questions only 2,000 people were asked in a poll. The Irish people will be told they voted for mostly unfounded silly reasons and in October after the next EU summit the media will report to the public how Cowen bravely battled for Irish declarations (unreliable promises from weak politicians) to be added on to the Lisbon treaty.

Important reasons why the Irish voted no will not be highlighted, such as desiring the other 26 nations to hold a democratic referendum, Qualified Majority Voting (weakening Ireland’s position in Europe by cutting our voting weight in half and doubling Germany’s and others), the fact that the self–amending article 48 means the treaty can be changed without another referendum, an unelected 2.5 year to 5 year president and so on…

The Irish media lead the public to believe No campaigners were trying to mislead the electorate about important issues such as EU corporation taxes, they portrayed issues to vote No as fantasy, while promoting the lies that Ireland would be thrown out of the EU, and when news comes out that proves the No campaign right RTE casually reports the story slipping by an admittance that the media lie on corporation taxes undermined the country. Published on the RTE website, 19th of June: “French finance minister Christine Lagarde says France has put plans for changes in the EU system of taxing company profits on hold. This comes after Irish voters rejected the Lisbon treaty last week. A pan-European method of calculating how much tax companies should pay.”

Already the media wheels are spinning that the Irish No voters were not informed (never mind the Yes voters) and as an excuses for a bad reason to vote No the media are saying for some reason Irish No voters thought the EU could make a better treaty. How could the Irish have thought such a thing? After France and Netherlands rejected the EU constitution the EU changed it by 4% and called it the Lisbon Treaty, now they say they don’t know why the Irish people thought there would be a new treaty in the future. If we fall for that poor attempt at manipulation the EU is telling us there was never going to be another treaty ever again. Are the people in the media dumb enough to “buy” this line or are they airing it because they feel the public might be.

The media is important because it shapes people’s opinions, especially those who are too busy to verify what they’ve been told, and the media have been working overtime with the result of this referendum, letting the Irish people know that the result is not acceptable. They are continuously highlighting the celebration among right wing groups and personalities excluding the widespread popular support from ordinary citizens who are celebrating our no vote. This is not a win for extremists but for ordinary people who are deeply concerned with the direction the EU has now taken. We are being exposed to double-speak on a massive scale. The real extremists are now the elites in Europe who are completely alienated from the people and pushing forward their agenda with no mandate.

Let us never forget that the French and Dutch said no to the EU constitution. The EU’s response was to take out 4% and call it the Lisbon treaty, make it unreadable so it wont go to a referendum were it would be voted down again, have the French and Dutch politicians pass the Lisbon treaty in spite of their people’s wishes, for the third time a nation voted No, the Irish, and the EU are still trying to push it through. If they do push it through the illusion of EU democracy that fooled so many for so long will fall and be replaced by an “out in the open” oligarchy for all to see. They come further out in the open by inventing minor “plausible” excuses mixed with fear trying to push through the Lisbon treaty. If Ireland resist political terrorism and vote No again the EU might take 2% out of the treaty, make it even more unreadable, rename the treaty and come back in 2 years, which will unveil the anti-democratic mechanisms of the EU further.

Up to the second referendum the media will bombard the Irish people with political terrorism, continually reporting legally incorrect opinions of how Ireland will be thrown out of the EU if they don’t vote the only way, yes. The fact that the EU gave Irish politicians billions to spend in the past (like farmers who are paid to grow nothing) will be used against the Irish people, who will be pressured like a prostitute to do what they are told. To keep the illusion of EU democracy up these reports will be mixed with “nice” statements of how the EU will be patient with Ireland and how the Irish voters will be “educated” better this time.

It’s vital for the Irish people to stand firm again, we voted against this treaty not for the spurious reasons we are now being led to believe, but because deep down we had a sense of unease that something isn’t right, and that we are losing too much control over our nation to unelected politicians. It is the goal of the politicians and media to distract you from this sense of unease and use whatever means possible to get their way. They have absolutely no concern for you or what you want, their goal is to have more power over you and sell you out to a small political group in Brussels . We already know how corrupt the politicians are, now it’s time for the people to take back control of our own lives and stop being manipulated for their agenda.

Myth of Consensus Explodes: APS Opens Global Warming Debate

July 16, 2008
Michael Asher (Blog)

"Considerable presence" of skeptics

The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible."

In a posting to the APS forum, editor Jeffrey Marque explains,"There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution."

The APS is opening its debate with the publication of a paper by Lord Monckton of Brenchley, which concludes that climate sensitivity -- the rate of temperature change a given amount of greenhouse gas will cause -- has been grossly overstated by IPCC modeling. A low sensitivity implies additional atmospheric CO2 will have little effect on global climate.

Larry Gould, Professor of Physics at the University of Hartford and Chairman of the New England Section of the APS, called Monckton's paper an "expose of the IPCC that details numerous exaggerations and "extensive errors"

In an email to DailyTech, Monckton says, "I was dismayed to discover that the IPCC's 2001 and 2007 reports did not devote chapters to the central 'climate sensitivity' question, and did not explain in proper, systematic detail the methods by which they evaluated it. When I began to investigate, it seemed that the IPCC was deliberately concealing and obscuring its method."

According to Monckton, there is substantial support for his results, "in the peer-reviewed literature, most articles on climate sensitivity conclude, as I have done, that climate sensitivity must be harmlessly low."

Monckton, who was the science advisor to Britain's Thatcher administration, says natural variability is the cause of most of the Earth's recent warming. "In the past 70 years the Sun was more active than at almost any other time in the past 11,400 years ... Mars, Jupiter, Neptune’s largest moon, and Pluto warmed at the same time as Earth."

Updated 7/17/2008

After publication of this story, the APS responded with a statement that its Physics and Society Forum is merely one unit within the APS, and its views do not reflect those of the Society at large.

Indian Snake-Worship Cult Takes On World Bank

July 17, 2008
By: World Liberation Wire Service

A strange new war has broken out in the remote Himalayan statelet of Nagapur, pitting ancient Serpent Deities against the global bureaucrats of the World Bank.

Not to be confused with Nagaland, Nagapur is a small “princely state” in the Himalayan foothills between Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. Its highest peaks get winter snow, its lowest plains join the heatchoked tiger-and-orchid jungles of the Terai, but all within a hundred-odd square miles.

Nagapur was mentioned in the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata as one of the “cities” of the Nagas or semi-divine were-snakes. Nagapur is still noted for its tantrik snake temples, some of them decorated in medieval Nepalese style with “obscene” carved wood sculpture. The former ruling family claimed descent from an ancestral cobra, the Sheesh Nang.

The Ahirajahs of Nagapur maintained a degree of independence under the Moghuls, then under the British Raj, but the Indian government abolished their “Purse” in 1957. At present several rival branches of the family claim Pretender status, but all are reduced to genteel poverty at best. Until recently their political significance was nil.

In the past few years however one clan of the family has achieved some degree of notoriety thanks to its connections with an emerging “Fourth World” resistance movement in Nagapur. Poor peasants and “tribals” who depend in part on the forest for economic sustenance have struggled against various “Green Revolution” agricultural policies, dams, and development projects, some launched by the Indian Government and others by Global institutions such as the IMF and World Bank.

The resistance is not centrally organized but manifests as a loose front of NGOs, political parties, cooperative economic and agricultural ventures, and religious organizations. At its extreme edge it has given birth to several rival small and ineffective guerilla “armies”, officially denounced by the moderate wings of the movement, but (according to the Indian Government) secretly supported and funded by them.

The matriarch of the Vasuki family, H.H. the Begum Guga Chauhan, who died in 1998 aged 95, had been a Ghandian socialist all her life. In the 1980s she met certain “Fourth World” activists and radical environmentalists, many of them women, and decided to link her family’s fortunes (not its fortune, because it had none) to the peasants’ movement in Nagapur. In 1991 she founded the Nagapuri Monarchist-Socialist Party, ostensibly to support the claims of her grandson the Ahirajah to the throne of the principality, and ultimately to win independence from India. Until recently the Party has remained miniscule and has won no elections.

The Begum however did not limit her activities to politics. The family maintains a relation of patronage with Ananta Nath, one of the major Shaivite Naga temples of the country, situated near the hill station of Zafarabad, some 25 kilometers up-country from the capital, Nagapur City. In the 1930s certain wealthy Indian Theosophists endowed this temple with enough money to build a small new structure within the complex devoted to “all religions”, including painted statues of Jesus, Mohammed, Ali, the Buddha, Confucius, Lao Tzu, etc., all depicted in Hindu style as divine avatars.

This universalist syncretism appealed to the peasant and tribal devotees of the snake goddess Nagalata Devi, worshipped at the main temple, and soon a new cult began to emerge as one important strand within the Nagapuri Fourth World resistance movement. The Begum enjoyed great influence with the cultists (mostly Hindus but some Moslems and even Christians as well).

In 1997 a great-grandson of the Begum was born and named Nagarjuna, and proclaimed Crown Prince. The infant’s horoscope was said to be unusually auspicious, and rumors began to spread amongst the adherents of the Naga Goddess. As Hindu-Moslem syncretists they came to believe that the young prince was both the Kalki Avatar (the savior incarnation of Vishnu) and the Mahdi or Hidden Imam revered by Nagapur’s Shiites and sufi mystics.

There is some evidence that the Begum may have encouraged these rumors, and a legend is circulated that on her deathbed she confirmed the prince’s messianic role and predicted his ascent to the throne.

The prince’s father and current Pretender to the Ahirajah’s throne, Sri N.H. Vasuki, a mild-mannered elementary-school teacher with no apparent political ambitions who lives in a small bungalow in the hill station near the Temple, has attempted to downplay and even dampen the mystical enthusiasm that surrounds his son, now ten years old. In Nagapur however it’s easy to hear wild stories about the prince’s precocious brilliance and supernatural abilities.

The mildest of these tales are those that claim the prince already adheres to and preaches his great-grandmother’s ideals: he proclaims that he will reign but not rule, that all power must devolve to the village assemblies; that Nagapur must win independence in order to escape the ecological and economic catastrophe of “Development” and globalization; that satyagraha (non-violence) is the only way to achieve these goals; that all religions are one; etc.

On June 15 last year Indian newspapers carried stories of a guerilla raid against an experimental research farm owned and operated by the World Bank in a remote forest area of Nagapur. Shots were fired but no one killed, equipment was vandalized, crops set ablaze. The attackers escaped. Employees at the farm maintained that the guerillas were all children and teenagers. A few days later a communiqué to the Police took credit for the attack on behalf of a previously unknown faction calling itself “Adhipati (Nagapur Liberation Army, Monarchist-Socialist)”.

Adhipati in Sanskrit means “without a lord”, and the communiqué explains the reference to a Hindu scripture that says, “The state of liberation does not at all mean the extinction of individual self. The liberated self can actualize his desires by mere will. The liberated self is without a lord (adhipati), for he himself is his own lord and anything he wishes he can realize.”

Perhaps paradoxically, given this premise, the communiqué goes on to swear loyalty and devotion to the young prince Nagarjuna and to identify him as the “divine savior of his people”.

The prince’s father at once issued a statement indignantly denying any link between his family and “these juvenile delinquents”. It appeared that the “army” was indeed composed largely of runaway children and homeless young people, very like the Burmese rebel “God’s Army” led by thirteen-year-old twin boys, Johnny and Luther Htoo, Christian messianic visionaries captured by the Thai government earlier in 2001. (The New York Times called Johnny Htoo “angelic”, and it is certain that his followers considered him divine.)

In the ensuing scandal and uproar over the attack the young prince’s father was fired from his teaching job. Critics of the World Bank rallied to his defense as a scapegoat for the Bank’s “disastrous policies and global hegemonism”. The Congress Party Governor of Uttar Pradesh, S.N. Veeraswamy, condemned Sri Vasuki as a “charlatan” and demanded the dissolution of the N.M.-S. Party as a criminal organization. Allegations of “superstition”, “fanaticism”, “child endangerment”, etc., were heard in New Delhi. Charges were made (and denied) concerning Nepalese Maoist influence.

The young prince himself was of course unavailable for comment, although religious chromolithographs of him have begun to appear in the bazaars of Nagapur.

As of this date no further incidents have occurred, although several street demonstrations have erupted from time to time in the capital. The Indian Army and the U.P. Police have so far failed to apprehend any Adhipati warriors, although a number of “urchins” (as the Times of India put it) may have been rounded up in Nagapur City and Zafarabad and detained in State orphanages.

The situation is agreed to be “tense” but sources in New Delhi claim that the Government is in control. From the other side come allegations of police brutality. Recently a rumor has spread that local elections will be cancelled.

(One of the NGOs in Nagapur, the Agricultural Institute of Asia, monitors ongoing events there, although it too condemns the Adhipati (NLA – M.-S.) as “adventurist and misguided”. A support group in Amsterdam calling itself “Friends of Adhipati” is also known to exist.)

The World in 2025, According to the National Intelligence Council

26 June, 2008
By: Daniel Taylor

Life extension technology, artificial intelligence, and an expansive “internet of things” are just a few of the topics that the latest report from the National Intelligence Council, “Disruptive Civil Technologies - Six Technologies with Potential Impacts on US Interests out to 2025“.

Earlier reports from the CIA and the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense have carried similar themes. The December 2000 CIA report, Global Trends 2015 stated that nation’s borders would weaken in the process of globalization, with an elite reaping the benefits,

Scenario Two: Pernicious Globalization Global elites thrive, but the majority of the world’s population fails to benefit from globalization… migration becomes a major source of interstate tension… Internal conflicts increase, fueled by frustrated expectations, inequities, and heightened communal tensions…”

The MoD strategic trends 2007-2036 report covers life extension technologies, stating that a divide may rise between those who can afford to extend their lifespan, such as dictatorial rulers,

“Developments in genetics might allow treatment of the symptoms of ageing and this would result in greatly increased life expectancy for those who could afford it. The divide between those that could afford to ‘buy longevity’ and those that could not, could aggravate perceived global inequality. Dictatorial or despotic rulers could potentially also ‘buy longevity’, prolonging their regimes and international security risks.”

The National Intelligence Council’s latest report outlines trends in technology that will shape the world to come in 2025. Among the technologies covered is the development of the Internet of Things. The Internet of things, also often referred to as “ubiquitous computing” is currently being tested and showcased in South Korea, where the technology developers admit that there are less expectations of privacy. The Internet of Things (IoT) will enable the tracking and tracing of everyday objects and people in a vast network similar to the internet. Ultimately, the “U-City” model of South Korea will be exported world-wide. PR campaigns for the U-City are already underway in the United States.

Watch this ABC News clip as the “convenience” of the technology is emphasized.

The NIC report on the internet of things states that by 2010, the ability for “Teleoperation and telepresence: ability to monitory and control distant objects” will be achieved. Among the various goals of the Internet of Things technology developers include:

Sensor networks need not be connected to the Internet and indeed often reside in remote sites, vehicles, and buildings having no Internet connection. Smart dust is a term that some have used to express a vision of tiny, wireless-connected sensors; more recently, others use the term to describe any of several technologies that range from the size of a pack of gum to a pack of cigarettes, and that are widely available to system developers.

Ubiquitous positioning describes technologies for locating objects that may reside anywhere, including indoors and underground locations where satellite signals may be unavailable or otherwise inadequate.

Biometrics enables technology to recognize people and other living things, rather than inanimate objects. Connected everyday objects could recognize authorized users by means of fingerprint, voiceprint, iris scan, or other biometric technology.”

The use of RFID tags embedded in everyday objects is the standard approach to achieving the internet of things vision. But, perhaps ominously, technology is being developed that would actually eliminate the need for RFID tags, while still allowing for the tracking of objects and people with the same efficiency. “Machine Vision”, as the NIC report states, “…could be a channel for delivering the same type of information that RFIDs enable.”

Machine vision is an approach to the IoT that can monitor objects having no onboard sensors, controllers, or wireless interfaces. For example, some developers propose that cameras on typical cell phones can capture images of objects; using image-processing algorithms, distant servers can identify such objects and report information about them. In other words, machine vision could be a channel for delivering the same type of information that RFIDs enable.”

The surveillance element of this technology will allow for “…everyday objects to be channels for surveillance, consumer surveys, measuring environmental-quality benchmarks, and any other continuously changing dimension of the world that people find valuable to track.”

There can be little doubt that a surveillance grid has been erected and is expanding every day. The next upgrade to this tracking grid will undoubtedly be spun with a “consumer convenience” approach.

Big Pharma Is in a Frenzy to Bring Cannabis-Based Medicines to Market

July 5, 2008
By Paul Armentano

While the the American Medical Association claims pot has no medical value, Big Pharma is busy getting patents for marijuana products.

The US government's longstanding denial of medical marijuana research and use is an irrational and morally bankrupt public policy. On this point, few Americans disagree. As for the question of "why" federal officials maintain this inflexible and inhumane policy, well that's another story

One of the more popular theories seeking to explain the Feds' seemingly inexplicable ban on medical pot goes like this: Neither the US government nor the pharmaceutical industry will allow for the use of medical marijuana because they can't patent it or profit from it.

It's an appealing theory, yet I've found it to be neither accurate nor persuasive. Here's why.

First, let me state the obvious. Big Pharma is busily applying for -- and has already received -- multiple patents for the medical properties of pot. These include patents for synthetic pot derivatives (such as the oral THC pill Marinol), cannabinoid agonists (synthetic agents that bind to the brain's endocannabinoid receptors) like HU-210 and cannabis antagonists such as Rimonabant. This trend was most recently summarized in the NIH paper (pdf), "The endocannabinoid system as an emerging target of pharmacotherapy," which concluded, "The growing interest in the underlying science has been matched by a growth in the number of cannabinoid drugs in pharmaceutical development from two in 1995 to 27 in 2004." In other words, at the same time the American Medical Association is proclaiming that pot has no medical value, Big Pharma is in a frenzy to bring dozens of new, cannabis-based medicines to market.

Not all of these medicines will be synthetic pills either. Most notably, GW Pharmaceutical's oral marijuana spray, Sativex, is a patented standardized dose of natural cannabis extracts. (The extracts, primarily THC and the non-psychoactive, anxiolytic compound CBD, are taken directly from marijuana plants grown at an undisclosed, company warehouse.)

Does Big Pharma's sudden and growing interest in the research and development of pot-based medicines mean that the industry is proactively supporting marijuana prohibition? Not if they know what's good for them. Let me explain.

First, any and all cannabis-based medicines must be granted approval from federal regulatory bodies such as the US Food and Drug Administration -- a process that remains as much based on politics as it is on scientific merit. Chances are that a government that is unreasonably hostile toward the marijuana plant will also be unreasonably hostile toward sanctioning cannabis-based pharmaceuticals.

A recent example of this may be found in the Medicine and Health Products Regulatory Agency's recent denial of Sativex as a prescription drug in the United Kingdom. (Sativex's parent company, GW Pharmaceuticals, is based in London.) In recent years, British politicians have taken an atypically hard-line against the recreational use of marijuana -- culminating in Prime Minister Gordon Brown's declaration that today's pot is now of "lethal quality." (Shortly thereafter, Parliament elected to stiffen criminal penalties on the possession of the drug from a verbal warning to up to five years in jail.) In such an environment is it any wonder that British regulators have steadfastly refused to legalize a pot-based medicine, even one with an impeccable safety record like Sativex? Conversely, Canadian health regulators -- who take a much more liberal view toward the use of natural cannabis and oversee its distribution to authorized patients -- recently approved Sativex as a prescription drug.

Of course, gaining regulatory approval is only half the battle. The real hurdle for Big Pharma is finding customers for its product. Here again, a culture that is familiar with and educated to the use therapeutic cannabis is likely going to be far more open to the use of pot-based medicines than a population still stuck in the grip of "Reefer Madness."

Will those patients who already have first-hand experience with the use of medical pot switch to a cannabis-based pharmaceutical if one becomes legally available? Maybe not, but these individuals comprise only a fraction of the US population. Certainly many others will -- including many older patients who would never the desire to try or the access to obtain natural cannabis. Bottom line: regardless of whether pot is legal or not, cannabis-based pharmaceuticals will no doubt have a broad appeal.

But wouldn't the legal availability of pot encourage patients to use fewer pharmaceuticals overall? Perhaps, though likely not to any degree that adversely impacts Big Pharma's bottom line. Certainly most individuals in the Netherlands, Canada, and in California -- three regions where medical pot is both legal and easily accessible on the open market -- use prescription drugs, not cannabis for their ailments. Further, despite the availability of numerous legal healing herbs and traditional medicines such as Echinacea, Witch Hazel, and Eastern hemlock most Americans continue to turn to pharmaceutical preparations as their remedies of choice.

Should the advent of legal, alternative pot-based medicines ever warrant or justify the criminalization of patients who find superior relief from natural cannabis? Certainly not. But, as the private sector continues to move forward with research into the safety and efficacy of marijuana-based pharmaceuticals, it will become harder and harder for the government and law enforcement to maintain their absurd and illogical policy of total pot prohibition.

Of course, were it not for advocates having worked for four decades to legalize medical cannabis, it's unlikely that anyone -- most especially the pharmaceutical industry -- would be turning their attention toward the development and marketing of cannabis-based therapeutics. That said, I won't be holding my breath waiting for any royalty checks.

Oh yeah, and as for those who claim that the US government can't patent medical pot, check out the assignee for US Patent #6630507.

The facts behind the fiction of the Lebanon war of 2006

July 16, 2008
By Daan de Wit
Translation by Ben Kearney

Today two dead Israeli soldiers have been returned to Israel by Hezbollah who kidnapped them before the Lebanon war. Their kidnapping was the official reason for the war, but was it also the factual reason?

On July 12th 2006, Israel invaded Lebanon. The official casus belli were the killings of three members of the Israeli Army by Hezbollah in Israel and the capture of two others. In actuality Israel prepared for the war in advance and waited for the opportunity to present itself in order to justify an attack. Motives such as these keep coming up for both sides in the border area between the two countries. Critic Noam Chomsky recounts a few of the incidents: 'IDF kidnapping of civilians on June 24, Hamas capture of a soldier the next day, then the huge U.S.-Israeli escalation of attacks on Gaza... then the kidnapping of soldiers by Hezbollah, then the U.S.-Israeli destruction of most of Lebanon, justified by the pretense of outrage over kidnapping, which – to repeat – is demonstrated, conclusively, to be cynical fraud'. While the war was still going on, Israel changed the code name by which military operations were being carried out from Operation Just Cause to Operation Change of Direction.

In March of 2007 Israeli Prime Minister Olmert admitted to the Winograd Commission that approximately three months before the Lebanon War he gave his permission for the operation by accepting a plan from his then-chief of staff Dan Halutz. Shortly after the kidnapping and in the midst of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, Halutz sold off his shares, and in so doing avoided the losses that occurred when the market fell by ten percent as a result of the war that followed. Olmert made his admission to the commission in order to demonstrate that the dramatic loss of the war was not due to ill preparedness .

In reality, the Lebanon War was even better planned than Prime Minister Olmert would admit to the commission. In January of 2006, four days after succeeding a comatose Ariel Sharon, Olmert held an initial conversation on a war against Lebanon. But it might be correct to look back even further. The war was 'in a sense' already being planned back in 2000, right after Israel withdrew troops from Lebanon after being there for 18 years, says Professor Gerald Steinberg of Israel's Bar-Ilan University. According to Steinberg, a war of about three weeks had been devised by 2004, after which it was simulated and rehearsed. The actual Lebanon War ended up lasting 34 days, resulting in 159 deaths on the Israeli side and 1125 deaths on the Lebanese side, of which hundreds were children. America was made aware of Israeli plans to attack Lebanon. American and other diplomats, journalists and thinktanks were notified approximately one year prior to the war with the help of a PowerPoint presentation, given by a senior Israeli army officer, writes the San Fransisco Chronicle. The meetings in which the plans for war were discussed in detail were held off the record and on the condition that the identity of the officer be kept secret.

After the war questions arise whether British Prime Minister Tony Blair was aware of Israeli plans and whether he might not have attempted more in order to avoid bloodshed. Journalist John Kampfner writes under the headline Blood on his hands: 'I am told that the Israelis informed George W. Bush in advance of their plans to 'destroy' Hezbollah by bombing villages in southern Lebanon. The Americans duly informed the British. So Blair knew'.
Kampfner's information is confirmed by an anonymous source from the English Daily Mail which was quoted in August of 2006 and said that Tony Blair was informed of developments concerning Lebanon by the U.S. At the same time the newspaper quotes another source, this one by first and last name - John Pike, director of Global Security: 'Has the U.S. given Israel a green light to attack Hezbollah and push its troops into southern Lebanon? Yes, of course it has'. According to Pike there is an agreement between Israel and the U.S. that Iranian nuclear plants would eventually have to be bombed - 'probably next year' - to stop the development of a nuclear weapon. Pike feels that once that happens, Iran will order Hezbollah to attack Israel. To him this explains the attack on Lebanon in July of 2006. Pike believes that there was a secret agreement between the U.S. and Israel that at some point before the attack on the Iranian nuclear facilities, Hezbollah had to be disarmed and that as soon as a pretext became available, Israel should use force. Just as in the case of Iran, Israeli interests run parallel to those of the United States.
This also appears to be the case in a 2003 report from the reputable Jane's Intelligence Digest that the U.S. was weighing an attack on Hezbollah. And in 2008 a plan was revealed that was not only considered, but was also approved and carried out. Approved by President Bush and realized by his Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - a plan to arm the Palestinian party Fatah. The goal was to provoke a Palestinian civil war in which the democratically elected Hamas would be toppled. The result was the complete control of Hamas over the Gaza Strip.

The armies of both Israel and Hezbollah were criticized in a report by Human Rights Watch for intentionally killing civilians. During the fighting, Israel dropped up to a million cluster bombs, probably acquired from the world's biggest producer of this type of explosive, as well as the one that provides Israel with billions of dollars in military aid - the United States. 'We already had a major landmine problem from previous Israeli invasions, but this is far worse', says Chris Clark of the UN Mine Action Coordination Center, standing before a map filled with flags indicating bomb sites. Cluster bombs were first used by the Nazis and are permitted under international law. In January of 2008 the United States resists proposals for stricter laws relating to cluster bombs and said that the explosives aren't bad as long as they are used responsibly. In June Defense Secretary Robert Gates states that by 2018 the military will no longer use cluster weapons with a failure rate greater than 1 percent. In the interim period the US will deplete its existing stockpiles of cluster munitions with a greater than 1 percent dud rate by exporting them to foreign governments that agree not to use them starting in 2018.

In the bombing of Lebanon, Israel may have made use - as it has done for decades - of American intelligence. In the area of psychological warfare, upwards of 700,000 automated voice mails were delivered to Lebanese citizens in and around the time of the war, and 17 million leaflets were dropped above Lebanon during 47 missions, some of which for example depicted Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as a snake or a scorpion. Israel also interrupted a Hezbollah TV channel in order to show a dead Hezbollah fighter, accompanied by the message that there will be many more such bodies to come. After the war was over, the Beirut advertising agency Idea Creation launched a $100,000 ad campaign at Hezbollah's behest called Divine Victory, delivering the message of a military victory over Israel .

A Middle East expert familiar with the mindset of both the Israeli and American governments says in August of 2006 to journalist Seymour Hersh that the White House had several reasons for supporting the Israeli attack. The most important was Iran. Another source, the neoconservative Middle East expert Meyrav Wurmser, confims this by saying that the main argument by the White House for supporting Israel was that the war 'would damage and weaken Hezbollah so that it would pose less of a threat to Israel in the event of an attack on Iran'. Wurmser is employed by the conservative thinktank Hudson Institute and is the wife of David Wurmser, who up until mid-2007 was the Middle East advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney. According to Meyrav Wurmser some of her colleagues are unhappy over what Israel did: 'The thought in America was that Israel should fight against the real enemy, the one backing Hizbullah. It was obvious that it is impossible to fight directly against Iran , but the thought was that its strategic and important ally Syria should be hit. [...] The neocons are responsible for the fact that Israel got a lot of time and space [for the execution of the war]'. Wurmser feels that an attack on Syria would have been a harsh blow to Iran. The great dissatisfaction in the White House - Wurmser even calls it 'anger' at Israel - over the loss of the war is focused on the fact that Israel didn't take the fight to Syria. On 6 September 2007 Israël attacked Syria: Operation Orchard.

7 Underground Wonders of the World: Labyrinths, Crypts, Catacombs and More

Written by Urbanist on September 30th, 2007

Paris 2

What motivates humankind to burrow deep into the Earth? From London to Paris, Budapest to Moscow, the USA to Australia, here are seven of the most amazing examples in the world. Some were built for military defense or shelter, many are abandoned while others thrive. These amazing images feature tunnels, caverns, labyrinths from seven underground location around the world, following the acclaimed 7 Underwater Wonders and 7 Abandoned Wonders of the World from our 7 Wonders Series.

Paris 3

Paris 1

Paris, France: There are extensive networks of catacombs, quarries and other tunnels running under the capital of France. Some of these amazing photographs were taken by urban explorers who lit the scenes with candles, producing remarkable image effects. The other images show the work of Paris General of Police from the late 18th Century, when disease led the city to bury bones underground in unused quarries rather than risk further infection of the population.

Moscow 2

Moscow 4

Moscow 1

Moscow 3

Moscow, Russia: This particular photographer is uniquely privileged, as an official government photographer, to take rare looks and snapshots of the myriad tunnels of all kinds running underneath Moscow. Clearly he does a great deal of post-production work, giving these images an air of surreality. Still, they are incredibly impressive and show a compelling range of locations.

Crypt 2

Crypt

London, England: The West Norwood Cemetery has a remarkable collection of historic monuments. Even more fascinating, however, are the catacombs below the chapel on site. As these images show, there is a remarkable collection of coffins in spaces of various sizes. The mahogany coffins have largely survived the test of time, while the pine ones have not fared quite as well. All in all, a beautiful collection, and largely left to wear naturally with time.

Ozarks 1

Ozarks 2

Ozarks, Midwest: The Ozark mountain range is filled with caverns and mines that date back generations. They are perhaps most famous for being the site where Radium was discovered shortly after radioactive elements were beginning to be understood in Europe. These more recent explorers featured here have certainly shown dedication, bringing along a raft to use flooded areas.

Budapest 2

Budapest 1

Budapest 3

Budapest, Hungary: A labyrinth of caves and tunnels span for miles under Castle Hill. These are believed to date back many centuries and to have been created for military purposes, and were more recently used as an air-raid shelter during World War II. Visitors are now allowed on two kinds of tours: a flashlight tour and fully lit tour. The aged walls and arches are something to behold. (Images via Dheera dot Net)

Disney World 1

Orlando, Florida: For a long time, mysteries circulated about tunnels underneath the so-called Magic Kingdom. As it turns out, the rumors were true: Disney World has an extensive system of underground passages used my employees to travel quickly and discreetly from place to place. These highly private tunnels are large enough to accommodate vehicles as well as pedestrians, and connect a series of offices, kitchens, cafeterias, storage and break rooms, which all lurk below the glittering facade of the world’s most famous theme park.

Coober Pedy 1

Coober Pedy, Australia: This small town in the middle of nowhere, Australia, is home to some of the strangest houses on Earth. A combination of climactic conditions and the existence of opal mining in the region have literally driven the residents underground. Everything from residences to churches are carved out of the ground as the above images show. The place is something of a tourist attraction, with underground hotels as well as a golf course above ground - though golf is played at night due to the regional heat!

If you are interested in exploring abandonments, check out this Beginner’s Guide to Building Exploration, these Urban Exploration Images and Links and 7 Tips for Legally Visiting Historical Abandonments.
